Capacity Building & Skill Development

Capacity building is a core objective of CHiAPRT. The Centre provides a range of training and skill-building events aimed at helping researchers and policymakers enhance their expertise and improve the alignment between research and policy.

Held annually, the Maximising Impact from Research-Policy Partnerships Masterclass is a valuable opportunity for developing connections and skills.

The masterclass is an interactive face-to-face short course for researchers, academics, policy actors, and practitioners focusing on developing skills and expertise in collaboration for research-to-policy translation. The masterclass uses a learning-by-doing approach in the form of lectures, small group work, self-reflection, group discussion, and feedback from participants.

I highly recommend this masterclass for any policy practitioner looking to increase their skills and knowledge in the important area of research translation. The insights I gained from a researcher’s perspective will certainly influence the way I think about, and apply, evidence-based policy making in my work, especially the importance of relationship skills to foster a partnership approach. There was a good balance of practical case examples and theory, and an interesting range of guest speakers. A thoughtful and well put together curriculum. Carmel is a highly knowledgeable and engaging facilitator.

In Conversation Roundtable

A platform to discuss and facilitate joint collaborative approaches and innovative solutions to global and local issues

The In Conversation: Boundary Spanners, Thinkers and Policy Actors series provides a platform for researchers, policy actors, and implementation experts to:

  • Elevate discussion on emerging issues
  • Present new and upcoming research
  • Facilitate conversation around impacts and possible solutions

Run as online webinars, the sessions bring senior policy makers together with researchers, academics, and implementation experts to discuss high priority topics of shared interest. Each discussion is produced into a video that is shared and made accessible to a wider audience, and the key messages of each Roundtable are distilled into a policy brief for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

WHO Short Course

An opportunity to chart a better course for population health and wellbeing through a shared learning

The 'Social Determinants of Health Equity: concepts and evidence' short course provides an opportunity to understand the intricacies of health and heath equity for better health outcomes.

All types of health workers and actors can improve their work for health equity through acquiring knowledge on the social determinants of health, the broader societal factors that influence these determinants, and the impact that these determinants can have on health outcomes.

By increasing understanding of how social and economic inequalities drive health outcomes and specifically, health inequities, and explaining the policy action needed to keep people healthy, a broader audience of health actors will be empowered to apply key concepts in their everyday work.

African Capacity Building Course

Strengthen comprehensive multisectoral and multi-stakeholder collaboration to address complex health challenges

Focused on strengthening and supporting Health in All Policies and multisectoral approaches, this capacity building course brings together actors from a diverse range of fields.

Held in Mombasa, Kenya, the 'Frameworks to strengthen comprehensive multisectoral and multi-stakeholder collaboration for complex health challenges' capacity building workshop brought together government staff from Botswana, Kenya, and Tanzania.

Coordinated by CHiAPRT and run by A/Prof Carmel Williams, the workshop brought together actors from different topic fields (such as social determinants of health, non-communicable diseases, or health promotion) to assess common core principles and practices for better coordination and strengthening of multisectoral capacities of governments as a whole.
